Coronavirus Highlights: India Records 170 Fresh Covid Cases Today

India saw a single-day rise of 170 coronavirus infections on Monday, while the active cases declined by 52 to reach 2,371.

According to the Union Health Ministry data updated at 8 am Monday, the total number of cases is now 4.46 crore (4,46,80,094).

The death count stands at 5,30,721 with one more fatality reported from Madhya Pradesh, the data stated.

China To Take Countermeasures Against Countries Imposing Restrictions On Chinese Travellers: Foreign Ministry
China today said it would take reciprocal countermeasures against countries that have imposed entry restrictions on travellers from China, state media Global Times reported. The country’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin during a press briefing said China urges the US to be transparent in sharing data on the currently prevalent Omicron XBB variant in the US. China on Sunday relaxed its COVID management measures from Class A to Class B. The country resumed cross-border travel and business starting Sunday, according to Global Times.

Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg Discourage Non-Essential Trips To China Amid COVID Surge

Germany, Belgium and Luxembourg have discouraged non-essential trips to China as the country struggles with a rapid surge in COVID cases post the Chinese government’s abandonment of its zero-COVID policy, reported Singapore based The Straits Times newspaper. “We currently discourage non-essential trips to China. The reason is a peak in COVID infections and an overwhelmed health system,” the German foreign ministry said on its official Twitter handle.

New Case Of COVID-19’s XBB 1.5 Strain Found, Total Cases Rise To 8: INSACOG
One new case of COVID-19’s XBB 1.5 strain, responsible for the surge of cases in the United States, was found in India, taking the overall number of such cases in the country to eight, according to INSACOG data. The new case of the strain was found in Uttarakhand in the last 24 hours, while earlier, three cases were found in Gujarat, one each in Karnataka, Telangana, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan, the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG) said.

2 new COVID-19 cases in Thane

Two new cases of coronavirus have been detected in Maharashtra’s Thane district, raising its tally of infections to 7,47,410, a health official said on Monday.

The new cases were reported on Sunday, he said.

There are currently 11 active COVID-19 cases in the district, the official said.

Covovax to get approval as booster in 10-15 days, says SII CEO Adar Poonawalla

Serum Institute of India’s Chief Executive Officer Adar Poonawalla has said their Covovax vaccine will get approval as a booster against COVID-19 in the next 10 to 15 days.

The vaccine works very well against the Omicron variant of coronavirus, Mr Poonawalla told reporters in Pune.

Covid situation in India better than elsewhere: Serum Institute’s Adar Poonawalla

Serum Institute of India CEO Adar Poonawalla on Sunday lauded India’s fight against the Covid pandemic, saying the government and the healthcare workers contributed largely to tackling the pandemic in the country.

The SII CEO made the remark at the inauguration ceremony of Bharti Super Speciality Hospital, Pune.

“Everyone is looking at India today our Covid management is one of the major reasons why. It was all possible because of the government, healthcare workers and a common goal to tame the virus,” he said.

 China has kept its COVID-19 death toll at a little over 5000, despite funeral homes across the country reportedly overflowing amid an increase in virus cases. Chinese doctors have been asked to avoid listing COVID-19 as a cause of death, NTD reported.

A doctor at a hospital in Beijing was asked to not report COVID-19 as the primary cause of death, NTD reported citing The New York Times. Similar warnings have been circulated on Chinese social media. A group chat conversation has asked doctors to not list the COVID-19 virus as the cause of death, as per the NTD report.
