PV Sindhu and Gagan Narang have been selected as the commission’s candidates for the Indian Olympic Association’s General Assembly.

MC The newly established Indian Olympic Association’s Athletes’ Commission “also nominated Gagan Narang and PV Sindhu as the commission’s nominees for inclusion in the electoral college for the election to the executive council of the Indian Olympic Association to be held on December 10, 2022,” according to a statement from Returning Officer Umesh Sinha’s office.

At the IOA Annual General Meeting, the members of the Athletes Commission will each receive one vote.

Here, the 10-member Commission held its inaugural meeting. Mary Kom, Narang, Sharath Kamal, Shiva Keshavan, Bajrang Lal, Om Prakash Karhana, and Rani Rampal joined them virtually, while Mirabai Chanu, Sindhu, and Bhavani Devi were physically present. The conference was also attended virtually by Sardar Singh, a member of the Olympic Council of Asia Athletes Commission, and Abhinav Bindra, the representative of India to the Athletes Commission of the International Olympic Committee. They both serve on the commission as ex-officio members.

A participant claimed that a vote led to a unanimous decision. “All opinions were considered.” “We discussed them and ultimately decided on them by consensus,” the member stated.

The Commission’s next responsibility is to choose eight Sportspersons of Outstanding Merit (SOM), who should hold at least one medal from the Olympics, Commonwealth Games, or Asian Games and who have been retired from competitive sports for at least a year prior to the application deadline. When choosing the IOA Executive Council candidates, the SOMs will each have one vote. Tuesday marked the last day to submit an application for SOM.

Mary Kom, a six-time world champion and medalist at the London Olympics, said of her new role, “It is a tremendous duty that I have been entrusted with, and I am truly honoured.”

“We must cooperate; it was a really productive meeting.” We will be pleased to do all we can to support the national athletes. The Athletes Commission is a group that includes so many outstanding Olympians and medalists, and it’s great that they represent a variety of sports and have so much combined experience, according to Kom.

“Also, having women represented in the body is a really wonderful thing.” The fact that female athletes are doing so well is undoubtedly a positive step toward gender equality in Indian sports. We are all very eager to work together for the advancement of Indian sports, said Kom.
